PHILADELPHIA - Members of the six Philadelphia-area Division I men's soccer programs gathered at the Sheraton University City on Wednesday night for the annual Philadelphia Soccer Six awards banquet. Drexel, which went to the NCAA Tournament for a second-consecutive season in 2013, earned several recognitions at the banquet, including a nomination for Team of the Year.
Tal Bublil and Ken Tribbett, seniors who guided the Dragons to their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association tournament title in their final season in the blue and gold, were named to the Soccer Six All-Star Team. Bublil, a defender, helped the Dragons 1.29 goals per game for the season, earning six shutouts. He also had a goal and an assist. Tribbett, a midfielder, finished second on the team with 10 points, scoring four goals including a game-winner in the Dragons' regular-season victory over William & Mary.
Also spotlighted was junior defender Robert Liberatore, who along with Bublil helped anchor the back line of the Dragon defense. While a key part of Drexel's defense, Liberatore was honored also for his achivements in the classroom, where he is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.99 grade-point average. Liberatore was named the 2013 John McAdams Academic Player of the Year among the six city schools.
While Bublil and Tribbett collected honors for their final season with the Dragons, two young members of the team were honored after their first. Midfielder Adam Arana and goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach were named to the 2013 Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Rookie Team. Arana had three assists in 16 appearances for the Dragons, while Afflerbach allowed just 1.12 goals per game on the year, second among Soccer Six keepers. He also had six shutouts and a 9-5-3 overall record.
The Soccer Six also took note of the 26 players throughout the city that earned one of the league's weekly awards. Five of those were Dragons, including Afflerbach (five-time Rookie of the Week and the Defender of the Week, Week 3), Bublil (Defender of the Week, Week 11), Joaquin del Rosario (Player of the Week, Week 11), Mark Donohue (Player of the Week, Week 3) and Tribbett (Player of the Week, Week 4).
Drexel finished 1-1 in its two official Soccer Six league matches, defeating La Salle 1-0 on Donohue's last-minute goal before falling at Penn, 3-2. In fact, all six city teams split their two league matches, the first time that has happened in the history of the association.
