Hampton, Va. – The Drexel softball team fell to St. Bonaventure on Sunday morning, 3-0 in the Lady Pirate Classic and then came up just short against tournament host Hampton, 3-2 later in the day.
St. Bonaventure got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first. The Dragons went down in order in the bottom of the inning, and then allowed another run in the top of the second. The score would stay the same through the remaining five innings as St. Bonaventure took home the victory.
Tara Konopka finished out the game for the Dragons after throwing 5.2 innings and allowing only four hits.
The second game of the day remained scoreless through four, during which time Shelby Taylor threw four strikeouts. The Dragons got on the board in the top of the fifth as Baeley Reed drove in two runs with a triple down the rightfield line. The Pirates retaliated by putting up two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. The game remained tied at 2-2 into the bottom of the seventh, but the Pirates ultimately scored the game-winning run as they capitalized on a fielding error with two outs.
The losses move the Dragons to 3-8 overall thus far on the season.
Drexel will conclude competition at the Lady Pirate Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader against Hampton. Games are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
