Villanova, Pa. - The Drexel women's soccer team defeated Villanova, 2-1, in the season opener on Friday evening. With the victory, the Dragons now hold a 2-0-1 overall record in the all-time series against the Wildcats.
The game remained scoreless though the majority of the first half until freshman Madison Dunn got the Dragons on the board with 15 seconds to go in the half. Heidi Gspurning connected with Dunn, who got past Villanova goalkeeper Emma Meyer and fired the ball into the net for her first goal as a Dragon. Then just six minutes after the second half began, Drexel extended its lead to 2-0 when Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll found the net on a deflection from a Villanova defender to mark her first career goal.
Despite being held scoreless 10 minutes into the second half, the Wildcats got on the board in the 53rd minute with a successful penalty kick. The Dragons would go on to hold Villanova scoreless for the remainder of the game and pick up their first victory of the 2014 season.
The Dragons outshot the Wildcats, 12-5. Goalkeeper Kelsie Fye recorded one save, while Villanova's Meyer tallied four on the game.
Drexel Women's Soccer returns to action next weekend as they travel to Niagara and Buffalo on Friday and Sunday respectively.
