Niagara Falls, N.Y. - Despite holding Niagara scoreless through regulation and a multitude of scoring opportunities, the Drexel women's soccer team fell to the Purple Eagles, 1-0 after two overtimes on Friday evening. With the loss, the Dragons move to 1-1 on the season.
Drexel came out firing early in the first half as they got off four shots in the first 17 minutes, all of which were saved by Niagara keeper Claire Feiertag. In the first half alone the Dragons outshot the Purple Eagles, 5-2.
With both teams still scoreless as the second half began, the Dragons did not wait long for another scoring attempt. Megan Hammaker got a promising shot off just six minutes into the half but it found the post. Less than five minutes later, Madison Dunn took a header shot that was blocked by the Niagara defense. Drexel had other opportunities throughout the remainder of regulation but without success.
At the start of the first overtime, the Dragons were not discouraged. Drexel's Dunn, Hammaker, and Alyssa Findlay each made an attempt at the goal within a three minute period early in OT. Hammaker put up another shot later in the period but it was blocked, sending the game into double overtime.
The second overtime saw another attempt from Drexel, this time a header shot from Melissa Chapman in the 103rd minute that went wide. Less than four minutes later, Niagara's Courtney Pierce scored the gamewinner off a pass from Haley Besaw to give the Purple Eagles the victory.
Drexel outshot Niagara 17-5 over the course of the game despite the loss.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday when they take the short trip from Niagara to Buffalo to take on the Bulls in a 12:00 p.m. match up.
