PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel Field Hockey team beat the VCU Rams 3-1 in the season-opener for both teams. The Dragons have now won four straight season opening games. Drexel improves to 10-7 all-time versus VCU.

The Dragons got goals from Jessica McCarthy, Meghan Plank and Rachel Sumfest to earn the season opening win. Drexel was able to generate 17 shots on the evening to VCU's 12.

McCarthy got the first goal of the season at the 22:50 mark of the first half. The goal was a result of penalty corner that Plank played in to Lauren Hibshman, who settled it down for McCarthy to fire home.

Both teams had chances to score in the remaining 13 minutes of the half but neither were able to get them into the back of the net.

Sumfest was able to put home a rebound off a shot from Christina Conrad for her first goal of the season, seven minutes into the second half. Seven minutes after Sumfest's tally, Plank got her first of the season with a shot from the right wing that beat Kendall Clifton in the Ram goal high to the near side right.

Alexis Albright got the Rams on the board at the 52:57 mark. The goal came off a redirect from a shot by Nicola Breeman.

VCU tried to cut the lead in half with nine minutes to play with shots from Alexis Schramm and Spencer Tossone but Jantien Gunter turned both shots back to keep the two-goal lead in tact.

Gunter recorded three saves on the evening to earn the win. The win is the 29th for Gunter in a Dragon uniform.

The Dragons return to the field on Sunday when the Saints of Siena at 1 p.m. at Buckley Field.
