COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite 18 saves from Jantien Gunter the Drexel Dragons fell to the No. 3 Maryland Terrapins 3-0 in their first game of the Terrapin Invitational. The loss drops the Dragons to 3-2 on the season and the Terps improve to 4-1 in 2014.
"A well played game by Maryland", said head coach Denise Zelenak postgame. Zelenak continued, "We will [need] to specfically focus and improve on decision making in high pressure situations and controlling the [game's] tempo."
Maryland got on the board in the 14th minute when Moria Putsch connected for her first of the afternoon. Putsch then doubled the Terrapin lead just three minutes into the second half with her third goal of the season and second of the game.
Following the first marker for the Terrapins the Dragons were unable to sustain an attack and record a shot and also unable to create a penalty corner situation.
Maryland controlled the opening minutes of the second half, which led to Putsh's second tally. The Dragons though were able to create a scoring chance of their own but a shot from Allyson Fuller was turned away and another chance from Fuller was blocked by the Maryland defense.
Sarah Spinks finished the scoring for the Terps in the 56th minute after putting home a shot off a penalty corner. Katie Gerzabel and Anna Deeoye recorded the assists on the Spinks goal.
Drexel had a couple of chances to get back in the game shortly after the third Maryland goal but shots from Mary Lynam and Christina Conrad were turned away by Brooke Cabrerra in the Maryland goal.
Gunter's 18 saves are two more than she had versus the Terps a season ago and is a new career high for the senior. The Dragons were limited to just four shots on the afternoon with Fuller recording two, Lynam with one and the other coming from Christina Conrad.
"Jantien was exceptional in goal today. Her talent speed and ability to stay engaged in multiple shot situations, resulted in 18 saves on 28 shots", said Zelenak of her goalkeeper.
The Dragons return to the field tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. when they face the Eagles of American University in their second game of the Terrapin Invitational.
