Field Hockey Suffers 1-0 Loss to No. 18 American

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Drexel field hockey team dropped the second game of the Terrapin Invitational by the score of 1-0 to No. 18 American University. The Dragons fall to 3-3 on the season and the Eagles improve 4-2 on the year.
The Dragons are now 1-6 versus teams ranked in the Top 25 over the last two seasons. The lone win came versus No. 10 Iowa at Penn State on September 21, 2013.
American struck first when Natalie Konerth put home a shot from in close with an assist from Haley Bowcutt. That was the lone tally in first 35 minutes.
The Dragons were able to get four shots away but just one getting on frame in the opening half. The four shots were split evenly between Jessica McCarthy and Christina Conrad.
Both teams were held scoreless in the opening ten minutes of the second half. Then Rachel Sumfest put a shot on goal that was turned away by Kate McBeath in the Eagle goal with 23 minutes to play.
The Dragons then got one final chance with a penalty corner with less than a minute to play. Sumfest played in the corner, which led to a shot from McCarthy with 27 seconds to play but McBeath turned it away to preserve her shutout.
The two sides combined for just 11 shots and seven penalty corners.
Drexel returns to the field at Temple on Sunday, September 21 at 2 p.m. Then after the five straight road games the Dragons return to Buckley Field on September 26 versus Rider at 6 p.m.
