Field Hockey Beats No. 13 Temple 1-0 in OT
9/21/2014 2:52:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – Christina Conrad scored the game winner after deflecting in a shot from Jessica McCarthy at the 5:58 mark of overtime to give the Dragons a 1-0 road win over the No. 13 Temple Owls. The Dragons improve to 4-3 on the season and put an end to their two-game-slide.
Conrad's marker ends a streak of more than 210 minutes without a goal for the Dragons.
After a scoreless first half the teams finished the second half were they started. Both teams did have chances to score in the closing minutes as the game slowly began to speed up and the both quads started finding space on the attack.
In the final twenty minutes Allyson Fuller made three key defensive plays to prevent quality scoring chances from Temple. One of those key defensive plays came when the Dragons were down a man, after a green card, at the 13:30 mark of the second half.
Meghan Plank had a chance to end the game with a shot from in close but Lizzy Millen, in the Owl goal, turned it away. Less then a minute later Jantien Gunter made a save on a Temple scoring chance to keep the Dragons in the game.
A few minutes later Conrad put home the winner off a deflection that beat Millen to her right.
The Owls held the advantage in shots 13-6 and shots on goal 9-5 throughout the contest. Gunter recorded eight saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
Drexel returns to the field on Friday when they take on Rider at Buckley Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m. on 26th of September.
