Field Hockey Cruises Past Rider, 4-0
9/26/2014 7:04:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – In their first home game in 26 days the Drexel field hockey team recorded their fourth shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over the Broncs of Rider. The win moves the Dragons to 5-3 on the season.
Rachel Sumfest got the Dragons started with her goal in the sixth minute off rebound after a battle for possession in front of the Broncs goal. The tally is Sumfest's fourth of the season.
Less than six minutes later, Cailean Meredith redirected a shot from Jessica McCarthy past Joelle Prettyman. The goal is the first in Meredith's career and the assist is McCarthy's third on the season.
Drexel had two penalty corners soon after Meredith's tally but were unable to convert them into shots on goal. Kathlyn O'Brien tried to get the Broncs back within a goal but Jantien Gunter turned the shot away to keep the 2-0 lead for the Dragons heading into the halftime break.
Less than two minutes into the second half the Dragons added another insurance tally as Chloe Pachuilo put home a feed from Danielle Grossi to make it 3-0. The prompted a goalie change for the Broncs as Hannah Isaacs came and Rider called their timeout.
In the middle stages of the second half Rider was able to generate some penalty corners but only one turned into a shot on goal, which was by Stacey Dileo in the 51st minute but Gunter turned it away. Gunter recorded two saves to record her third shutout of the season and her 13th of her career.
Allyson Fuller made a key defensive save as she preserved the shutout when she denied Carlie Spaeder of a goal after she beat Gunter from the left. Thats turned out to be the final chance for the Broncs on the night.
Sumfest recorded her second of the night and team-leading fifth of the season with less than two minutes to play, when she put home a pass from Meghan Plank.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. when they host Kent State at Buckley Field.
