9/28/2014 1:11:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – After coming back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 the Drexel field hockey team pulled away from the Golden Flashes of Kent State on Sunday afternoon to earn a 6-3 win on Alumni Day. The Dragons have now won the first two of three straight at home and improve to 6-3 on the season.
Kent State got on the board first when Alison Harmatz beat Jantien Gunter in the Dragon goal with less than six minutes gone in the first half. After forcing a Kent State turnover Mary Lynam got the Dragons back to level in the 20th minute on her second of the season.
Just three minutes later Hannah Faulkner pushed the Golden Flashes back into the lead when she put one in the net off a pass from Krysti Lober. Once again Drexel responded, this time it was the first of two goals for Jessica McCarthy at the 31:57 mark. McCarthy fired a shot past Andrea Rinehart in the Kent State goal off a pass from Rachel Sumfest.
With the game tied 2-2 and with under a minute to play in the first half, Chloe Pachuilo put the Dragons in front with her tally inside a half-minute to play in the half.
Kent State answered in the opening minutes of the second half when Julia Hofmann scored off a penalty corner with less than four minutes gone in the second half. Both teams traded chances over the next 10 minutes but none were able to break the deadlock.
Drexel did manage to break the deadlock and did so three times in a span of ten minutes. Pachuilo, with an assist from Rebecca Werner, and McCarthy, with an assist from Lynam, recorded their second goals of the day and Jenna Knouse finished off the scoring with her first of her college career in the 64th minute.
Gunter made eight saves on 11 shots to earn her sixth win of the season for Drexel.
Next up for the Dragons is No. 7 Penn State on Friday, October 3 at 7 p.m. at Buckley Field.
