Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play With Win Over Charleston
9/26/2014 8:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Philadelphia, Pa. - The Drexel women's soccer team earned its first conference win of the season with a 1-0 victory over College of Charleston Friday night. Junior Lauren Stollar scored the gamewinner for her third goal of the season.
Stollar's goal came in the 34th minute after a lot of action in the box off a Drexel corner kick. Stollar took the corner kick, sending it into the box where it found Madison Dunn. Dunn made an attempt but it was saved by Charleston goalkeeper Lauren Killian. The rebound of the save bounced back to Sam Greenfield who fed the ball to Stollar to set her up for the goal.
At the half, the Dragons still led the Cougars, 1-0. Later in the game, Charleston had a strong opportunity to get on the board when Drexel fouled with just over six minutes to go, giving the Cougars good position for a direct kick. Charleston's Nicole Koretsky fired the ball towards the goal, but it was blocked by the wall of Drexel defenders. The Cougars were unable to overcome the deficit Drexel had created as time winded down.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 4-5-1, while the Cougars move to 4-6. Junior keeper Kelsie Fye picked up her third straight shutout as she recorded five saves. Charleston's Killian saved nine in the losing effort. Overall, the Dragons outshot the Cougars, 23-11.
Drexel returns home on Sunday to host CAA opponent UNCW at 2:00 p.m. at Vidas Field.
