DURHAM, N.H. – A second half goal from Meg Flatley was enough for the New Hampshire Wildcats to slip past the Drexel Dragons on Friday afternoon in Durham, New Hampshire. The loss is the first for the Dragons this season as they fall to 2-1. With the win the defending America East Champions improve to 1-2.
"No one ever plays to lose, so of course we feel disappointment with the loss, especially having outshot our opponent. UNH capitalized late in the contest and even then I felt the team stayed focused and continued to create scoring opportunities", said head coach Denise Zelenak.
The Dragons held a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in penalty corners but could not get the ball past Carlie Tarbell in the Wildcat goal.
In the first half the Dragons were able to control the course of play, which led to shot advantage but were unable to capitalize on chances from Rachel Sumfest, Chloe Pachuilo and Cailean Meredith in the opening twenty minutes. Sumfest had a chance to get the Dragons on the board just before the half but Tarbell recorded one of her 10 saves on the afternoon to keep the game scorless at the break.
The Flatley tally came against the flow of play at 61:38 mark, as the Dragons had shots from Christina Conrad and Jenna Knouse get turned away before Flatley recorded her second of the season.
Pachuilo had a chance to equalize just three minutes after UNH took the lead but her shot was turned away by Tarbell. The chance turned out to the be the final one on the afternoon for the Dragons. After a timeout the Dragons pulled Jantien Gunter from the goal but they were unable to pull even and force the extra frame.
Zelenak continued, "They have some very nice players including their keeper, who made some key saves and earned her shutout. We will continue to build from this loss and improve for our game at Fairfield on Sunday."
Next up for the Dragons is a road tilt versus the Stags of Fairfield University on Sunday in Fairfield, Connecticut. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
