Philadelphia, Pa. - The Drexel women's soccer team fell short to Temple, 3-2, in its home opener at Vidas Field on Sunday afternoon. Senior Megan Hammaker and freshman Kylie Strong each recorded a goal for the Dragons in the losing effort.
Temple got on the board first when Shannon Senour scored off a pass from Kaylee Harner in the 22nd minute. The Owls would strike again 15 minutes later as Alyssa Kirk curved one into the net off a corner kick.
Down 2-0, the Dragons rallied with three shots in the next four minutes. Lauren Stollar sent an attempt into the box, but it was saved by Temple's keeper Shauni Kerkhoff. Melissa Chapman got off a shot thirty seconds later but it went high of the net. After Drexel forced a corner kick, Alyssa Findlay sent one into the box that found Strong, who headed the ball into the net for the Dragons' first goal of the game.
Drexel would go into halftime trailing the Owls, 2-1. Two minutes after the break, Hammaker got off a shot but it was blocked by the Temple defense. The Dragons followed with three more attempts in the next nine minutes but to no avail. The Owls regained possession and Kayla Cunningham sunk one into the net for Temple's third goal of the game.
Trailing by two goals yet again, Drexel retaliated as Civanni Moss sent one into the box to Hammaker, who tapped it into the net. With the deficit back to just one, the Dragons went on the offensive to try to even the score. In the 77th minute, Moss sent a promising shot into the box that was skillfully deflected by Temple's Kerkhoff. Two minutes later Madison Dunn made an attempt that was also saved by Kerkhoff.
As time wound down the Dragons had a few more chances to tie the game. With under four minutes to go, Hammaker had a strong attempt that hit the post. Moss got the rebound and seconds later followed with another promising shot that also found the post. Despite these attempts, the Dragons were unable to overcome the deficit that the Owls had created.
Drexel keeper Kelsie Fye tallied six saves in the contest, while Temple's Kerkhoff recorded eight. Overall, the Dragons outshot the Owls, 17-14.
