DURHAM, N.C. - The Drexel wrestling team went 1-1 on the day Saturday with a 19-18 win by criteria over EIWA opponent American and a 24-13 loss to Duke.
Drexel got on the board against Duke in the first match of the day as Joey Goodhart earned a 3-2 decision over the Blue Devils' Brendan Walsh at 285. In the 125 match, however, Eric Ochoa fell by injury default causing Duke to take a 6-3 lead. No. 16 Kevin Devoy Jr came up next and regained a Drexel lead as he earned a major decision over Duke's Mitch Finesilver and then David Pearce followed with an 11-7 decision at 141 to give Drexel a 10-6 advantage. Marcus Cain just edged out Matthew Cimato in the 149 pound matchup, earning a 5-4 decision to bring the Blue Devils within one point, 10-9, but then Noel Blanco picked up a 10-8 overtime victory to increase Drexel's lead to 13-9. Duke was able to pick up two major decisions in a row at 165 and 174 to take a 17-13 lead and then solidified its victory with two more wins to finish out the dual.
In the second matchup of the day, Goodhart led off against American with a 2-0 win at 285. A Dragons forfeit at 125 put them behind, 6-3, but then Devoy earned a 3-1 decision over the Eagles' Josh Terao to tie the team score up at six-all. Pearce followed by pinning American's Michael Sprague at the 4:43 mark to put Drexel ahead, 12-6, but then Cimato and Blanco each dropped a decision at 149 and 157 respectively allowing the Eagles to tie things back up at 12-12. Drexel pulled ahead in the next two matches as Nick Elmer picked up a 10-3 decision at 165 and Stephen Loiseau earned a 6-1 victory at 174. However, American secured decisions in the last two matches to finish with the score tied at 18-18. Drexel was awarded the victory after winning the tiebreaker by the third criteria, 34-33.
After today's competition, the Dragons move to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in conference duals. Drexel returns to action tomorrow as they round out the weekend with a dual at North Carolina at 3:00 p.m. The Tar Heels hold a 7-3 overall record going into Sunday's competition and are 0-1 in ACC action.
