PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team fell to James Madison on Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The loss forces the Dragons to settle for a split of their first home weekend of conference play.
The first half saw fairly even play from both teams. The Dragons and Dukes each got off four shots in the period, but to no avail. Both teams headed to the locker room for halftime with the game still scoreless at 0-0.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, James Madison got on the board as Ashley Herndon put the ball into the net for the Dukes. Herndon was trying to break past the Drexel defense when the ball was blocked and kicked loose. The James Madison junior standout picked up the ball quickly and sunk it into the net to put the Dukes ahead, 1-0.
The Dragons had a few strong opportunities to even the score late in the second half as freshman Krista Ledins' attempt found the post in the 86th minute. Less than a minute later, Vanessa Kara sent a ball towards the top corner of the goal that was batted away by James Madison keeper Ellen Forrest to maintain a Dukes' advantage. The Dragons would not be able to overcome the deficit in the remaining time left in regulation.
The Dragons outshot the Dukes, 12-11. Drexel keeper Kelsie Fye and James Madison's Forrest had six saves apiece for their respective teams.
With the loss, Drexel moves to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play while James Madison improves to 9-4, 3-0 CAA.
The Dragons returns to action on Friday, Oct. 9 when they will travel to face Delaware at 7 p.m.
