NEWARK, Del. - The Drexel women's soccer team fell to Delaware by a score of 1-0 on Friday evening after almost an hour lightning delay. The Dragons had a lot strong opportunities early on but were unable to overcome the Blue Hens.
The first half proved to be a battle between the two squads. Drexel got off six shots to Delaware's five in the half, three of which forced Delaware keeper Kailyn Rekos to knock them down. The Dragons and Blue Hens would go to halftime with the game still scoreless.
The Blue Hens got on the board in the 58th minute as Delaware goal-leader Natalie Zelenky found a pass from Elise Krause and put the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. The goal, which marked Zelenky's ninth of the season, gave the Blue Hens a 1-0 advantage that they would ultimately maintain throughout the rest of regulation.
With just under 11 minutes to play, the Dragons tried to rally as Shaelyn McCarty sent a ball to Vanessa Kara in the middle. Kara was able to get off a strong shot, but Rekos made a diving save to maintain a Delaware lead.
Delaware tried to extend their lead with a strong attempt from Zelenky in the 84th minute, but Drexel keeper Kelsie Fye fell on the ball to keep the Dragons in the game with just a one-goal deficit. Then with under five minutes to play, Drexel saw another opportunity in the box but Kara's cross was intercepted by Delaware's Rekos. The Dragons offense put pressure on the keeper, but Rekos was ultimately able to maintain control. The Blue Hens would go on to secure a 1-0 victory as the clock wound down to zero.
Despite the loss, the Dragons outshot the Blue Hens, 11-9. Fye recorded three saves in the losing effort while Delaware's Rekos stopped five Drexel attempts.
The Dragons are now 7-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play. With the win, Delaware improves to 6-6-2 on the year and now holds a 1-2-2 record against CAA opponents.
The Dragons will return to action next Friday, Oct. 16 when they will host William & Mary at Vidas Field starting at 7:30 p.m.
