FINAL BRACKETS
FRESNO, Calif. - Drexel wrestler David Pearce finished competition on Sunday as the 133 pound Road Runner Open Champion. Pearce was one of eight Drexel place-winners in the tournament, three of which were runners-up.
Pearce won four matches in a row on his way to the 133-pound title, one of which was a technical fall over San Francisco State's Fern Perez. The redshirt junior solidified his victorious effort with a major decision over Ronald Stevens of Oregon State in the finals.
Austin Rose, Stephen Loiseau, and Joey Goodhart finished in second place at 165, 184, and 285 respectively. Rose secured a tech fall and a pin in his first two matches and then won by decision over San Francisco State's Travis Ino to advance to the finals, but fell to Edinboro's Casey Fuller by a 3-1 deficit in his final match of the day. Loiseau started out with a major decision in his first match and then made his way through the brackets with wins over Stanford's Tommy Kimbrell and Peter Galli. He was ultimately edged by another Cardinal, Garet Krohn, by a 5-1 and finished as the runner-up. The fourth Dragon of the day to make it to the final round, Goodhart was ultimately defeated by William Miller of Edinboro after he won two decisions and advanced by medical forfeit to earn a chance to compete for the title.
Ranked 14th in the nation by WrestlingReport going into this weekend's competition, Matthew Cimato had a strong outing that resulted in a third place finish at 149 pounds. The redshirt junior totaled four technical falls on the day and was only forced into the consolation rounds when Stanford's Paul Fox edged him out with a 7-6 decision in the semifinals. He worked his way through the wrestlebacks by defeating Oregon State redshirt Bryce Parson and Cal State Bakersfield's Coleman Hammond to place third on the tournament.
Redshirt sophomore Zack Fuentes added to Drexel's success with a fourth place finish at 125. Fuentes earned two 3-2 decisions in a row to advance to the semifinals, where he was defeated by Stanford's Connor Schram by a score of 2-0. He worked his way through the consolation rounds to the third place match, but ultimately was edged by Oregon State's Kegan Calkins, 7-2.
Rookie Mike Comunale lost his first match but then won four in a row in the wrestlebacks. The freshman fell to Edinboro's Spencer Nagy in his final match of the day, but was able to secure a sixth place finish at 157. Redshirt freshman Nezar Haddad also earned a sixth place finish for Drexel in the 197 bracket. Haddad dropped his opening match to Edinboro's Vince Pickett, but then earned wins over Menlo College's Kaine Cole and Stanford's Boomer Fleming to work his way through the wrestlebacks to the fifth place match, where he fell to Cal Poly redshirt Thomas Lane.
Despite not placing, several other Dragons had notable performances including Richard Viruet who went 4-2 on the day with two tech falls at 157. In the 133 bracket, Franco Ferraina finished with a 3-2 record on the tournament with two of his three wins coming as major decisions. Meanwhile, Ryan O'Connor (157 lbs) and Nick Elmer (174 lbs) each recorded a pin while going 1-2 on the day.
