Sanchez wins 3-Meter Title at CAA Diving Championships

NEWARK, Del. – On the second day of the CAA Diving Championships David Sanchez won the 3m Championship to earn his second career CAA title, after finishing second in the 1m last night.
Sanchez, who was the number one qualifier, left little doubt on Sunday night in the 3m finals where he was 34.1 points clear of Giovanni Villanueva of UNCW, who beat Sanchez last night. Sanchez shattered his season-best in the win with a 373.35. That is an improvement of 12.05 points from his mark last year at the CAA Diving Championships and 41 points better than his title winning total from 2013.
Sanchez was named Men's Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet with his win in the 3m and his runner up in the 1m.
Like last night, Simon Carne made it two Dragons in the finals with his eighth place finish. The freshman posted a total of 233.75.
Shayne Watson was first in the consolation final with teammates Anthony Cirelli and Reed Vennell finishing in third and fourth respectively.
The high finisher for the Dragons in the women's 1m competition was Jaclyn Goulet who recorded a fifth place in the consolation final. Goulet's 237.35 is a new season-best for the sophomore from Middlebury, Connecticut.
The Dragons now turn their attention to the swim portion of the championships that start on Wednesday at the Colligate School Aquatics Center in Richmond, Virginia at 6 p.m. and run until Saturday.

David Sanchez finished second, after coming up just short on his final dive, in the men's 1m championship with a 324.10. That mark is a season best for the junior. Giovanni Villanueva won the titlewith a 326.30. Simon Carne finished eighth overall with a 231.65. Sanchez did qualify first overall after the preliminary round.
In the men's consolation, Anthony Cirelli finished 10th (225.50), Reed Vennel was 13th (189.20) and Shayne Watson finished 15th (180.60).
On the women's side no Dragon was able to qualify for the finals or the consolation in the 3m. Jaclyn Goulet just missed the consolation with her 17th place finish in the qualification round. Brittany Seibert finished 21st and Hailey Ihlow was 24th.
The divers return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the men competing in the 3m and the women competing in the 1m that starts 12 p.m. The finals will be at 7 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.
