WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. – Drexel Tennis completed a busy weekend of action in style on Sunday night against Lafayette at RiverWinds Golf and Tennis Club in West Deptford, N.J.
Women's tennis improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season, cruising past the Leopards, 5-0. This is their best start to as season since starting 9-0 in 2008-09. Men's tennis moved to 7-2 on the year, defeating Lafayette, 4-1.
"We regrouped, cleaned up our mistakes and emotional blocks and got back up on the men's side," head coach Mehdi Rhazali said. "On the women's side, we played aggressive tennis, and our confidence is where it needs to be. Now we need to recover well and get ourselves ready for UMBC."
The women began the evening for the Dragons, continuing the dominant play that Rhazali spoke of after the team's Saturday win over Lehigh. Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch set the tone for Drexel, downing Lafayette's doubles duo, 6-0, to open play.
Singles play was more of the same for the Blue and Gold. Nicole Pivonka turned in a top-notch performance, beating Caroline Nixon, 6-1, 6-0. Next up, Erin Bowsher battled her way to a two-set win over Rocine Moschella, 6-4, 7-5. A pair of freshmen finished off the match for Drexel, as Clary Rodriguez Cruz defeated Catherine Senopoulos, 6-2, 6-2, and Ryshena Providence turned in a shutout performance, 6-0, 6-0.
The men seized the momentum started by the women, recovering from Saturday's close loss to Lehigh to beat Lafayette, 4-1. Kashyap Ashok and Dan Koehler paired up to take down Lafayette's pair, 6-1, to get the men off to a strong start.
In men's singles, the Dragons grabbed wins in the top three spots. Alex Fioravante moved up to the No. 1 position, topping Brandon Goldstein, 6-1, 6-1. Xabier Saavedra took his match over Brian Pinkard in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Hamza Laalej finished off the job for the Dragons, defeating Jake Lazer, 6-0, 6-2.
The Dragons return to action next weekend as they travel to UMBC for a Valentine's Day match-up in Catonsville, Md. at 4 p.m.
