Field Hockey Falls in Season Opener to Virginia, 6-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Drexel field hockey team (0-1) fell in its season opener on Friday night to No. 9 Virginia (1-0) by the final score of 6-0 in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia scored five goals in the first half and added a sixth 10 minutes into the final half to secure the win. The Cavaliers' van Zinnicq Bergmann scored the final three goals for Virginia.

Junior Ainslie Rhoads earned the start in the cage for the Dragons before being relieved by freshman Erin Gilchrist for the remaining 35 minutes. In her collegiate debut, Gilchrist allowed just one goal to go along with seven saves.

Junior Jessica McCarthy got a scoring opportunity early on the in matchup for Drexel. The midfielder took a hard shot but was thwarted by the Cavaliers goalkeeper.

Virginia's tough defense limited the Dragons to two shots in regulation. Mary Lynam had a shot blocked with about 10 minutes left in the opening half.

Drexel will play its second game of the season on Sunday, August 30 at noon against the Richmond Spiders in Richmond, Va. Live stats and video will be available for the afternoon matinee.
