RICHMOND, Va. - The Drexel field hockey team (0-2) dropped a Sunday matinee to the Richmond Spiders (2-0) at Crenshaw Field, 2-1.
The Dragons' defense kept the squad in the game. After allowing six goals to No. 9 Virginia on Friday, Drexel held the Spider to just two goals on Sunday.
Richmond's Amy Cooke struck first on a corner 10 minutes into the affair, giving the Spiders a 1-0 lead at halftime. Kelly Quinn then extended it to a two-goal margin in favor of Richmond less than a minute into the second half when she redirected a bouncing ball in the circle for the score.
Drexel junior Jessica McCarthy continued her offensive production on Sunday by leading the team in shots once again. McCarthy helped Drexel get on the board with less than six minutes to play when she assisted junior forward Idrienne Walker on a one-time goal to cut the Dragon deficit to one with around five minutes to play.
The goal came as Drexel's first of the season and Walker's first since October 19, 2014 which also came against Richmond. The junior from Gaithersburg, Md. now has five career goals.
The Dragons tried to maintain possession in the ensuing minutes but could not mount a comeback to tie the game as the young squad fell, 2-1.
Drexel returns to the Philadelphia for two games next weekend. The Dragons play at Saint Joseph's on Friday, September 4 before hosting No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday, September 6 in the home opener.
