Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Shutout Over VCU
9/11/2015 9:14:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team earned their third shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over VCU on Friday night. Vanessa Kara picked up her third goal of the season that proved to be the game-winner for the Dragons.
Kara's goal came in the 18th minute as she broke through the defense coming up the right side and sent a shot into the top left corner of the net. The Dragons would hold onto this 1-0 advantage and take it into halftime.
Drexel came out strong in the second half as Kara got another promising shot off just over a minute into period, but it found the crossbar. Shaelyn McCarty followed a minute later with another attempt that went wide.
As the period progressed, the Rams would have a couple strong opportunities for a comeback but they did not pan out. With just over a minute to go, VCU's Dallas Smith made an attempt to tie the game, but the ball was controlled by Drexel keeper Eve Badana.
As the Dragons held off the Rams for a 1-0 win, Kara's goal proved to be the game-winner for the third time this season. In fact, all three of the rookie's career goals have ultimately given Drexel a victory this season.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 5-2 on the year while the Rams move to 1-5 overall. Badana made three stops on her way to her third shutout of the season. She now has 20 career shutouts, a mark which tops the leaderboard for Drexel goalies in program history. VCU's Emma Kruse totaled four saves on the night.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Niagara at Vidas Field at 1 p.m.
