WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Drexel women's soccer team fell to UNCW in the first game of conference competition on Friday evening, 3-2.
Kylie Strong and Vanessa Kara scored for the Dragons in the losing effort. Strong's goal was her first of the season and for the rookie Kara it marks the sixth on the year.
UNCW jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute as Katrina Guillou connected with Stephanie Bronson who was able to find the goal. Less than three minutes later, the Seahawks extended their advantage to two goals as Moa Jarl put the ball in the back of the net off a corner kick.
With just over three minutes to go in the first half, Strong put the Dragons on the board with a corner kick that curved into the net and over the UNCW keeper's head to make it a 2-1 game. The Seahawks would maintain this one goal lead as the teams cleared the field for halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, UNCW struck again as Jarl connected with Maddie McCormick for the Seahawks' third goal of the game. Down two goals heading into the 64th minute, Kara cut the deficit to one goal yet again as she turned a Seahawks turnover into an open shot and made it a 3-2 game.
Shaelyn McCarty made an attempt to even the score four minutes later, but UNCW keeper Carolyn Huddy brought it down to maintain the Seahawks lead. The Dragons were able to get a few more shots off, but to no avail and UNCW would go on to earn its first conference win of the season by a final score of 3-2.
Drexel keeper Eve Badana made six saves on the game and the Dragons' defense added two stops. UNCW's Huddy totaled three saves on the competition.
With the loss, the Dragons move to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in CAA action. The Seahawks advance to 8-3, 1-0 CAA.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday afternoon when they will visit the College of Charleston. Drexel will look to pick up its first conference win of the season in the game which is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
