CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Drexel Wrestling's Matthew Cimato earned a fourth place finish at the 2016 Southern Scuffle in the 149-pound bracket. Cimato was one of four Dragons that advanced to the second day of competition at the tournament hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Cimato started off day two with a win over Central Michigan's Justin Oliver in the 149 quarterfinals after a win by forfeit and two decisions on the first day made him one of the final eight competiting in the championship round. In the semifinals, Cimato was put up against the No. 1 ranked Zain Retherford of Penn State. A 13-3 major decision in favor of Retherford sent Cimato to the consolations, where he battled back with a 3-2 win over No. 12 Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State. In the third place match, Cimato took on Oliver of Central Michigan again and while the two were neck-and-neck through two periods, Cimato would ultimately fall by a score of 5-2 and finish in fourth place on the tournament.
David Pearce started competition on Saturday with a major decision over Jason Delacruz of Cal Poly in his first match in the 133 consolations. He was halted, however, in his next match as Northern Colorado's Rico Montoya defeated him, 5-1.
Franco Ferraina also entered the wrestlebacks at 133 to open competition on Saturday. He faced Drew Walker of Campbell, but fell by technical fall to conclude his competition in the tournament.
Goodhart, the fourth Dragon to move on to the second day of competition at the Southern Scuffle, started Saturday off with a 5-2 decision over Boyce Cornwell of Gardner Webb. In his next match, however, Goodhart fell to Cary Miller of Appalachian State by a 5-3 deficit.
The Dragons return to action on January 15 as they will travel to Annapolis, Md. to face EIWA opponent Navy. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m.
