TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel field hockey team (8-9, 3-2 CAA) officially earned a berth to the CAA Championship with a 3-1 win at Towson (2-16, 0-5 CAA) on Friday evening.
Drexel punches a ticket to the conference postseason for the second-straight season and the fourth time in the last five campaigns.
Sophomore Megan Wiest led the Dragons offensively with two goals in the victory to give her 12 on the season. It comes as the most in a season since Lindsay McArdle scored the same number back in 2012.
After a scoreless first half with Towson, Drexel scored two quick goals to grab a 2-0 lead, which the Dragons held onto for the remaining of the contest.
Wiest scored 6:04 into the final half when she caught the Towson goalkeeper out of position. Senior Idrienne Walker notched an assist on the play, 1-0.
Less than three minutes later, Wiest struck again as she deflected a pass off the stick of sophomore redshirt Alison McCardell, who tallied an assist on the score, 2-0.
Freshman Tess Bernheimer scored her sixth goal of the campaign with under 10 minutes to play. Walker recorded her second assist of the night on the goal by the freshman, 3-0.
Towson got a late goal back with 3:22 to play when Paige Zaleppa tipped a shot from Taylor Kvilhaug, 3-1.
The stingy Drexel defense held the Towson Tigers to just one shot in each of the halves.
The Dragons led shots, 19-2, shots on goal, 14-2, and penalty corners, 7-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (W, 8-9) grabbed the win in the cage for the Dragons after allowing just one goal.
Drexel now heads to Newark, Del. for a Sunday CAA matchup with the No. 9 Delaware Blue Hens. Action is set for noon.
