JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Drexel Tennis picked up a pair of victories heading into spring break as the women swept St. Peter's Saturday, 7-0, and the men beat the Peacocks, 6-1.
The women improve to 10-2 on the season, for their third consecutive 10-win season. It is the first time in program history the women's team has eclipsed three straight 10-win seasons. Drexel's men improve to 9-4 on the year with the win.
Drexel's women started off strong and would not let off the gas pedal all afternoon. They swept the doubles point, getting wins from the pair of Honami Yazawa and Clary Rodriguez Cruz at No. 1 as well as the dominant pair of Kendra Bunch and Lea Winkler at No. 2. Both duos won 6-0.
In singles play, the Dragons continued the momentum, sweeping across the board. Rodriguez Cruz got the call at No. 1 and took care of business, 6-3, 6-0. Erin Bowsher earned the win at No. 2 over Malieva Hedberg, 6-3, 6-4, followed by Winkler winning at No. 3 over Claudia Hellman, 6-0, 6-1. The back half of the draw went just as well as the top half. Bunch won at No. 4 over Stephanie Falcon, 6-0, 6-1, while Ryshena Providence did not yield a point in her 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Aidah Muhammad. Rodriguez Cruz and Providence each notched their 30th career singles victories with their wins.
Drexel's men continued their winning ways, jumping out to a quick point by winning doubles. The pairs of Sinan Orhon and Kashyap Ashok as well as Vuk Subotic and Xabier Saavedra picked up victories to give the Dragons the early lead.
In singles play, the Dragons continued the momentum, slipping up only once on the afternoon. Saavedra moved within two wins of becoming the second Drexel men's player to amass 50 career singles victories with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jorge Rodriguez. At No. 3, Hamza Laalej took care of business, beating Jonathan Paredes, 6-2, 6-0. The back half of the singles ladder saw similar success. Balaji Lakshmanan picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gabriel Russotto, followed by the freshman Orhon winning 6-3, 6-1 over Douglas Nover. Subotic finished off the Peacocks with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Justin Sinparsith.
The Dragons will return to action when they head south after final exams for matches against UNCW and the College of Charleston. They will open their southern trip with the Cougars on March 22.
