GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader with North Carolina A&T on the road on Wednesday. The Aggies edged the Dragons, 3-2 in walk-off fashion in game one but then Drexel came back to defeat North Carolina A&T in the second game of the day, 10-7.
Drexel got on the board early in game one as Samantha Asbra hit a sacrifice fly to bring Baeley Reed in from third base in the first. The Dragons added another run in the second as this time Reed's sac fly brought Kimberly Chan in to score. Drexel would hold a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but then North Carolina A&T got one back as the Aggies combined a triple and a single to make it a 2-1 game.
The Dragons would hold off the Aggies until the bottom of the seventh, when Lorrin Turner put the ball in play with the bases loaded. Turner was safe at first on a fielder's choice as the tying run crossed the plate and then a throwing error allowed another run to score that would ultimately allow North Carolina A&T to walk away with a victory. Tara Konopka was awarded the loss and moves to 5-4 on the year.
In game two, Drexel came out strong with a five-run first inning. The Aggies got one back in the bottom of the first, but then the Dragons added another in the second as Chan singled in Jenelle Ladrido to make it a 6-1 game. North Carolina A&T again came back with a single run in the bottom of the third, but the Dragons reciprocated by adding another single run of their own in the third to extend their lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the third, North Carolina A&T's Raven Gray led off with a solo home run to cut the lead to 7-3 and then Jillian Nobles singled in another run to make it 7-4. The Dragons fought back again and added two runs in the fourth to extend their advantage to 9-4.
A single to center field in the bottom of the fourth would drive in the Aggies fifth run of the game to cut Drexel's lead to 9-5. Two innings later, Savanna Johnson would give the Dragons an insurance run with a single that brought Chan across the plate. The Aggies would score a run in each the sixth and seventh innings, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created. The game was called due to darkness in the bottom of the seventh inning and Drexel was able to secure a 10-7 victory to improve to 13-9 on the year.
The Dragons return to action tomorrow as they are set to take on North Carolina Central in a single game starting at 5 p.m.
