PRINCETON, N.J. - Six Drexel wrestlers advanced to day two of the EIWA Championships, including Zack Fuentes (125) and Matthew Cimato (149) who will compete for the Dragons in the semifinals on Sunday morning. David Pearce, Austin Rose, Nick Elmer, and Joey Goodhart move on to compete in the consolation round of four tomorrow in the 133, 165, 174, and heavyweight brackets respectively.
No. 5 Fuentes picked up wins over Columbia's Britain Carter and Cornell's No. 4 Dalton Macri on the opening day of competition to advance to the 125 semis, while No. 2 Cimato downed Hofstra's Kyle Krasavage by major decision and then edged Navy's Corey Wilding, 5-4 to move on to the semis at 149 lbs. Both wrestlers will continue action tomorrow in the championship round as they battle on in an effort to secure the EIWA title for their respective weight class.
At 133, No. 4 Pearce picked up an 11-3 major decision over Princeton's Noah Ajram in his opening match, but then was halted in the quarterfinals by Penn's Caleb Richardson, who he had upset in dual action this season. Pearce then took a 9-4 decision from American's Esteban Gomez-Rivera to stay alive and will face No. 8 Jeffrey Ott of Harvard tomorrow in the consolation round of four.
No. 7 Rose started off the day with a 12-3 major decision over Binghamton's Anthony Deprez at 165. In his second match, he was faced with Lehigh's No. 2 Ryan Preisch and ultimately fell by a 5-1 decision. Rose then overcame Princeton's Judd Ziegler in his first match of the wrestlebacks to advance to day two of competition. He will take on American's No. 5 Mitchell Wightman, who he defeated 11-4 in dual action earlier this season, in the consolation round of four tomorrow morning.
Elmer began competition at the EIWAs with an upset over No. 4 Jon Schleifer of Princeton at 174. Although he was halted in the next round by Navy's No. 5 Jadaen Bernstein, he was able to earn a 7-3 win over Franklin & Marshall's Joshua Young in the wrestlebacks to move onto day two. Tomorrow he will face Lehigh's Gordon Wolf in the consolation round of four.
In the heavyweight bracket, No. 8 Goodhart started off strong with a win-by-fall over Navy's Nick Mabry just over two minutes into the match. In his next outing, however, he was stopped by No. 1 Joe Stolfi of Bucknell with a 5-2 decision. Goodhart would go on to edge Penn's Patrik Garren for the third time this season to continue on to competition tomorrow. He is set to face Franklin & Marshall's Antonio Pelusi, who he defeated 3-2 in dual action earlier this season, in the consolation round of four.
Kevin Devoy Jr. (141), Ryan O'Connor (157), Stephen Loiseau (184), and Joshua Murphy (197) were each eliminated from competition after tallying two losses on Saturday. No. 8 Devoy picked up a 6-5 decision over American's Tyler Scotton in the second tiebreaker in his first match of the day, but then was stopped by No. 1 Rick Durso of Franklin & Marshall and No. 7 Nic Gil of Navy.
No. 8 Loiseau and Murphy each lost their first match in the championships rounds, but were able to secure a win in their first matchup of the wrestlebacks. Loiseau defeated American's Jason Grimes, 3-1 before he fell to Bucknell's No. 7 Tom Sleigh and was eliminated from competition. Murphy earned a 6-2 decision over Binghamton's Mark Tracy but then was given his second loss of the day by Bucknell's No. 8 Tyler Greene. O'Connor had a tough outing as he dropped two matches to No. 5 May Bethea of Penn and Harvard's Tyler Tarsi.
