FINAL BRACKETS
PRINCETON, N.J. – Matthew Cimato earned the title of EIWA champion at 149 pounds and a total of six Dragons placed as competition wrapped up at the 2016 EIWA Tournament. Cimato becomes the second wrestler in program history to earn this distinction and will advance to compete at the NCAA Tournament at Madison Square Garden on March 17-19.
Zack Fuentes will join Cimato at nationals as he earned a third place finish at 125 pounds and secured the last automatic bid allocated to the EIWA in his weight class. The Dragons on the whole secured an eighth place finish among 16 teams.
David Pearce (133 lbs.), Austin Rose (165 lbs.), and Joey Goodhart (285 lbs.) each went 3-2 on the conference tournament to earn seventh place finishes in their respective weight classes, while Nick Elmer earned an eighth place finish at 174 after going 2-3 on the weekend.
No. 2 Cimato secured a 5-4 win over Cornell's No. 5 Joe Galasso in the final seconds of the title match. Cimato led, 4-2 with 10 seconds to go in regulation, but as time wound down Galasso was awarded a takedown to even the score. Cimato was able to get an escape before time expired to secure the victory and become Drexel's second-ever EIWA champion.
Cimato's path to the finals began as he downed Hofstra's Kyle Krasavage by major decision and then edged Navy's Corey Wilding, 5-4 on day one of the tournament to advance to the semifinals. In the semis on Sunday, he defeated Bucknell's No. 6 Victor Lopez with a 9-0 major decision that would send him to the title match.
No. 5 Fuentes earned his third place finish at 125 as he defeated No. 4 Dalton Macri of Cornell for the second time on the weekend. Fuentes picked up a 4-2 decision with a takedown in sudden victory to punch his ticket to New York City for the NCAAs. Fuentes had defeated Princeton's No. 6 Pat D'arcy earlier in the day to advance to the third place match. On day one, he picked up wins over Columbia's Britain Carter and Cornell's Macri to move on to the semis on Sunday.
No.4 Pearce defeated Franklin & Marshall's Scott Stevens by a 7-1 margin to secure a seventh place finish at 133. Prior to this, he fell to Harvard's No. 8 Jeffrey Ott in his first match of the day, which cost him his chance at an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament since the EIWA has just three spots allocated for 133 bracket. On day one, Pearce picked up an 11-3 major decision over Princeton's Noah Ajram in his opening match, but then was halted in the quarterfinals by Penn's Caleb Richardson, who he had upset in dual action this season. Pearce then took a 9-4 decision from American's Esteban Gomez-Rivera to stay alive and advance to day two of competition.
No. 7 Rose picked up a 3-1 decision over Navy's Michael Coleman to place seventh at 165. Earlier in the day, he was edged by American's No. 5 Mitchell Wightman, 3-2 which eliminated his chance of an automatic bid to NCAAs as the EIWA only had four spots allocated for 165. Rose had started off day one with a 12-3 major decision over Binghamton's Anthony Deprez at 165. In his second match of the tournament, he was faced with Lehigh's No. 2 Ryan Preisch and ultimately fell by a 5-1 decision. Rose then overcame Princeton's Judd Ziegler in his first match of the wrestlebacks to advance to day two of EIWAs.
No. 8 Joey Goodhart earned a seventh place finish in the heavyweight bracket after he pinned Sacred Heart's Ray Sherwood just over a minute into his final match of the tournament. Goodhart lost out on a chance at an automatic bid after he fell to Franklin & Marshall's Antonio Pelusi earlier in the day in sudden victory. The EIWA was only given six spots for heavyweights to automatically advance to NCAAs. On the first day of competition, Goodhart started off strong with a win-by-fall over Navy's Nick Mabry just over two minutes into the match. In his next outing, however, he was stopped by No. 1 Joe Stolfi of Bucknell with a 5-2 decision. Goodhart would go on to edge Penn's Patrik Garren for the third time this season to continue on to day two of competition.
Elmer finished eighth at 174 after falling to both Lehigh's Gordon Wolf and Binghamton's No. 6 Jack McKeever on the second day of the tournament. Elmer just missed a shot at automatically advancing to NCAAs in his final match of the tournament as McKeever picked up an escape in the second period and held on to defeat Elmer. The EIWA was only allocated seven spots for the 174 weight class. Elmer had begun day one of competition at the EIWAs with an upset over No. 4 Jon Schleifer of Princeton at 174. Although he was halted in the next round by Navy's No. 5 Jadaen Bernstein, he was able to earn a 7-3 win over Franklin & Marshall's Joshua Young in the wrestlebacks to move onto day two.
Kevin Devoy Jr. (141 lbs.), Ryan O'Connor (157 lbs.), Stephen Loiseau (184 lbs.), and Joshua Murphy (197 lbs.) were each eliminated from competition after tallying two losses on Saturday. No. 8 Devoy picked up a 6-5 decision over American's Tyler Scotton in the second tiebreaker in his first match of the day, but then was stopped by No. 1 Rick Durso of Franklin & Marshall and No. 7 Nic Gil of Navy.
No. 8 Loiseau and Murphy each lost their first match in the championships rounds, but were able to secure a win in their first matchup of the wrestlebacks. Loiseau defeated American's Jason Grimes, 3-1 before he fell to Bucknell's No. 7 Tom Sleigh and was eliminated from competition. Murphy earned a 6-2 decision over Binghamton's Mark Tracy but then was given his second loss of the day by Bucknell's No. 8 Tyler Greene. O'Connor had a tough outing as he dropped two matches to No. 5 May Bethea of Penn and Harvard's Tyler Tarsi.
