Philadelphia, Pa. – Hofstra's Korey Hendrickson scored four times and Hofstra scored five straight goals in the third quarter on its way to a 10-4 win against Drexel at Vidas Field. The Pride improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dragons fell to 4-8 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
With the win, the Pride won the third annual HEADstrong Hero Bowl. The HEADstrong Hero Bowl is held annually between both teams. The event pays homage to cancer survivors and serves as a tribute to those who have lost their battle against the diseases. The uniqueness surrounding this event is that it will follow the regular season CAA schedule, providing an opportunity for service and volunteerism for students on both campuses.
The Pride broke open the game by scoring five times in the third quarter. Drexel committed four turnovers in the third, including three early when it was still a 4-1 game. The Pride scored five goals, including three in a span of two and a half minutes, to increase its lead to 9-1. Hendrickson scored twice in the third, one on the man-up to start the quarter, and one with less than a second to play in the frame. Josh Bryne also had two in the quarter, one coming with a man advantage. Frank Fusco, Jeremy Omrod and Nick Valentino each scored goals for the Dragons in the fourth quarter after the games outcome was already decided.
Hofstra scored the only two goals of the first quarter and never trailed in the game. The Pride opened the scoring with an extra-man goal five minutes in. Brendan Kavanaugh found Hendrickson on the crease and he scored for the 22nd time this season. Five minutes later Brian von Bargen made it a 2-0 game. The Pride would keep the Dragons off the board for the entire first quarter. Drexel finally got on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the second period. Sophomore Michael Kay fired a lefty shot from 15 yards away to cut the lead in half. That would be the Dragons only goal of the first half as Jack Concannon was outstanding in the first 30 minutes. He made eight saves in the half, including stopping a rocket from Cole Shafer late in the half from close in. The Pride's third goal was almost a carbon copy of the first as Kavanaugh and Hendrickson hooked up against. Sam Llinares closed the first half scoring by coming around the cage after a restart and beat Jimmy Joe Granito on the doorstep. The Pride outshot Drexel 22-13 in the first half and 38-22 in the game.
The Pride took advantage of Drexel penalties, scoring on three of their five extra-man attempts. Conversely, Drexel's man-up was ineffective as the Dragons were scoreless in four tries. Hofstra won 12 of 17 face-offs and had a 32-20 advantage on ground balls.
Drexel will play at Delaware next Saturday before finishing up the regular season at Vidas Field against UMass on April 29.
