Philadelphia - The Drexel golf team finished the 2016 spring regular season with a second-place finish at the Finegan Invitational hosted by La Salle. The Dragons played well throughout the day and finished tied with Navy after 36 holes. The teams went to a playoff, where the Midshipmen came away with the victory. Chris Crawford's record-setting career at Drexel came to a close with yet another individual title. Crawford finished the 36-hole tournament at four-under-par 138 and was the medalist for the second-straight tournament. The event was played at the historic Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa.
Crawford, playing in his final regular season match as a Dragon, made it a memorable one. The senior started the day by going three-under-par over the first 18 holes on the par-71, 6,707-yard course. His 68 in the opening round tied a Finegan/LaSalle Invitational record. In the afternoon, Crawford fired a one-under-par 70. His score was four strokes better than anyone else in the tournament as the Bensalem, Pa. native was the only competitor to play the day under par. Crawford extended his school record by winning his eighth tournament. In his last three outings, Crawford has two victories and a second-place finish.
The Dragons had a solid showing from all five of their players on Monday afternoon. Yoseph Dance shot a one-over-par 72 on the opening 18 and finished 15th overall on the day with a 149. Brian Fischer had his best showing of the season. The junior from Lansdale, Pa. carded a 75 in the first round, the third-best score on the team. He had a total of 152 on the afternoon. Adam Mistretta shot a 154, but had a 76 in the final round, the second best score among all Drexel players.
The Dragons led everyone with a 293 after 18 holes, but Navy came back to tie it and force extra holes. The Midshipmen fired a 296 as a team in the final round. Drexel and Navy were each one shot better than Lehigh and two shots better than Lafayette. Villanova finished in fifth, while the host La Salle Explorers were sixth.
Drexel will conclude the 2015-16 season this weekend at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The Dragons will be aiming for their first ever CAA title when they tee it up at Saint James Plantation in Southport, N.C. The tournament begins Friday and will feature 18 holes of play on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
