PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team took two games from UMES in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Drexel Field. The Dragons defeated the Hawks, 5-0 in game one and then went on to win 8-0 after six inning in the second game of the day as Jourdan Skirha hit a walk-off single to bring in two runs and put the run-rule into effect.
Game one remained scoreless into the fourth inning, but then the Dragons broke the game open as they scored three runs off of four hits. Taylor M. Lee started off the inning with her second home run of the season, a solo shot over the fence in left center. Two batters later, Kimberly Chan hit an RBI double to bring pinch runner Sharon Zamora across the plate and then a single up the middle from Vanessa Lightfoot later in the inning brought in the Dragons' third run of the game.
Drexel continued its scoring effort in the bottom of the fifth as Kai Uyesaka and Chan hit back-to-back RBI singles that would bring the Dragons' advantage to 5-0. The Drexel defense would hold the Hawks scoreless through the sixth and seventh and allow the Dragons to walk away with the victory.
In the second game of the day, the Drexel offense put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Baeley Reed singled with two runners on to bring Lightfoot in from third and then two batters later Paula Ueno singled through the right side to drive in two more runs.
In the fifth, the Dragons extended their lead as Uyesaka hit a three-run shot over the left field fence, her second of the season, to make it a 6-0 game. An inning later, three consecutive singles from Lightfoot, Jenelle Ladrido, and Reed loaded the bases for Skirha, who singled through the left side to drive in two runs. This put the run-rule into effect and allowed the Dragons to earn an 8-0 walk-off victory.
Katie Haley and Tara Konopka both improved their records with the victories over the Hawks. Haley improves to 5-7 on the year while Konopka adds her ninth win of the season. Each pitcher threw four strikeouts in their respective winning efforts.
With the wins the Dragons improve to 19-29 overall, while the Hawks move to 11-28 on the year.
The Dragons will return to action this weekend as they close out their home conference schedule with a series against UNCW. The Dragons and Seahawks will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and then will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game at noon. Sunday's game will also play host to Senior Day and Drexel's four seniors will be honored prior to the first pitch.
