Philadelphia – Robert Frazee scored four goals and Nick Valentino had his first career hat trick as Drexel defeated UMass, 10-5, on Senior Day at Vidas Field. It was the second straight win to end the regular season for the Dragons (6-8, 2-3 CAA). The Minutemen ended the year with a 4-9 mark (0-5 CAA). With the Dragons' win and Delaware's loss on Friday, Drexel is now headed to the CAA Championships. Final seeding will be determined following Hofstra vs. Towson on Saturday.
Drexel scored a season-high four goals on the man-advantage. Three of Frazee's goals came with a man-up, as did Jordan Cunningham's in the closing minute.
Drexel got off to a slow start in the early going and the Minutemen led 1-0 halfway through the first quarter. Dan Muller's goal at the 11:24 mark was the only tally in the early going. Midway through the first, the Dragons capitalized on a UMass mistake. The Minutemen were called for a holding penalty and then got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on top of that, giving Drexel the opportunity it needed. Frank Fusco set up Robert Frazee as the first penalty was expiring to even the game. Thirty seconds later, Frazee got his second man-up goal. Nabil Akl won the face-off after a scrum and found Frazee breaking in alone on the right. The junior finished, giving the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night. Michael Kay made it 3-1 after putting home a nice feed from Cole Shafer, and goalie Jimmy Joe Granito made a huge save as time expired in the first to preserve the two-goal lead.
Will Manganiello got on the board early in the second, but UMass answered back to cut the deficit to just two on a Ben Spencer goal. Frazee, who finished with five points, then set up Nick Valentino with 5:10 to play for his first of the game, and Drexel went to intermission ahead, 5-2. The Minutemen kept in close and trailed by just two heading into the fourth quarter. Jake Lisauskas and Gianni Bianchin sandwiched goals around a Drexel man-up goal by Frazee to make it 6-4. However, the fourth quarter belonged to the Dragons. Drexel won four of the six face offs and had two even man-goals by Valentino in the first six minutes of the quarter to give Drexel an 8-4 lead. Matt Varian set up the first and Jacob O'Donnell the second one. UMass tried to make a late run as Brendan Hegarty scored an unassisted goal with 4:04 left, but Frazee and Cunningham iced the game for Drexel.
Granito made 10 saves as he picked up the win in goal. Drexel's defense forced 10 of the 17 UMass turnovers. Pat Root, playing in his final home game, had five caused turnovers, while Jake Kiernan added four more. The Dragons outshot UMass, 37-24 and almost doubled up the visitors on ground balls (29-15). Akl won 12 of 17 face-offs for Drexel and also had a game-high eight ground balls. Sean Sconone made 12 saves for the Minutemen.
