Berryman, Sanchez Named CAA Swimmer and Diver of the Year; Binkauskas, Klotz Honored

RICHMOND, Va. – The Drexel men's swimming and diving team grabbed three major CAA awards in addition to an academic honor as announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon. Seniors Joel Berryman and David Sanchez were named the Swimmer of the Year and Diver of the Year, respectively. Freshman Michael Binkauskas was tabbed as the Rookie Diver of the Year while senior Matthew Klotz made the All-Academic Team.
JOEL BERRYMAN – CAA MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
Berryman won three individual gold medals at the recent 2016 CAA Swimming Championships as he was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet. He won the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back, breaking school records in the process. His 100 free time of 43.56 was a Drexel school record, CAA Championships record and NCAA B cut time. The New Zealander is the first Drexel swimmer to be named the Swimmer of the Meet and the Swimmer of the Year. He holds nine of the 19 total school records including the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, 200 back in addition to being part of the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay record holders. Yesterday, he was named to the CAA Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete. He also earned the team's Most Valuable award at the squad's season-end banquet.
DAVID SANCHEZ – CAA MEN'S DIVER OF THE YEAR
Sanchez earned gold in the 1m board (333.25) and finished second in the 3m (355.50) at the CAA Diving Championships. He was named the Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet and Diver of the Year for both the third time in his four years. His top dive on the year for the 1m (6 dives) was 315.98 against Howard and NJIT while his best 3m (6 dives) was 356.15 at the Patriot Invitational. His top 1m (11 dives) and 3m (11 dives) both came during the prelims of the CAA Championships with scores of 335.60 and 357.00, respectively.
MICHAEL BINKAUSKAS – CAA MEN'S ROOKIE DIVER OF THE YEAR
Binkauskas competed for the first time at the CAA Diving Championships this year as he was named the Rookie Diver of the Year by the conference. At the championships, Binksuskas came in sixth in the 1m finals with a score of 212.40 and eighth in the 3m finals with a total of 227.10. His top dives on the year for the 1m (6 dives) and 3m (6 dives) were 230.35 and 231.30 at Delaware. His top 1m (11 dives) and 3m (11 dives) both came during the prelims of the CAA Championships with scores of 214.96 and 234.15, respectively.
MATTHEW KLOTZ – CAA MEN'S ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Klotz maintained a 3.93 grade point average as a finance major. This year he set a new best time in the 200 free at the CAA Championships with his first finals time of 1:41.75. In addition, his top 100 free time was 47.64 at the Patriot Invitational, 4:37.18 in the 500 free prelims at the CAA Championships, 2:11.19 in the 200 breast prelims at the CAA Championships and 56.57 in the 100 IM at a home meet against Howard and NJIT. He also earned the Coaches Award at the squad's season-end banquet.
