Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Win over Monmouth
8/28/2016 4:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - An early goal from sophomore Vanessa Kara allowed the Drexel women's soccer team to defeat Monmouth, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Kara scored an unassisted goal just over a minute into the game that would prove to be the game-winner.
Monmouth started the game with possession, but Kara intercepted a pass in the backfield and took it down the field herself with a break-away run. With two defenders on her tail, she pulled Monmouth keeper Amanda Knaub out the goal and then tapped it past her into the center of the net to give the Dragons an early 1-0 advantage. The Drexel defense proved strong enough throughout the remainder of the game to hold the Hawks scoreless, which helped secure Drexel's third win of the season.
Junior keeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded her second shutout of the year as she denied the Hawks despite their 10 shots on the outing. The Dragons recorded nine shots of their own on the game. Ogunsami tallied five saves in the competition, while Monmouth's Knaub totaled two.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Hawks move to 0-2-1 thus far on the year.
Next up, the Dragons will hit the road for Labor Day weekend as they travel to Colorado for a two-game trip. Drexel will take on Northern Colorado first on Friday, Sept. 2 at 9 p.m. EST in Greeley, Colo. before making the trip to Boulder to take on Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. EST.
