PHILADELPHIA - Drexel Head Softball Coach Carl Taylor announced the addition of Stacy Jones and Joe DiPietro to his coaching staff for the 2016-17 season.
Jones (nee Jackson), who will serve as pitching coach for the Dragons, comes to Drexel after previously serving as the head softball coach at Hammonton High School in New Jersey. Over her nine years at the helm of the program, she led the Blue Devils to three South Jersey titles and nine conference championships. Jones was named the Philadelphia Inquirer's High School Softball Coach of the Year in both 2004 and 2005. She also received Coach of the Year honors from the Atlantic City Press in 2004 and the Courier Post in 2008. She was inducted into the Hammonton Hall of Fame as the coach of the 2004 state champion team.
Prior to her stint at Hammonton, Jones was a collegiate pitching coach at St. John's in 1997 and at Briarcliffe College from 1998 to 2002. Before that, she was a standout pitcher at Hofstra where she set numerous pitching records for the Pride during her time there. At the end of her career, she led Hofstra all-time in wins (96), starts (122), innings pitched (885), strikeouts (638), and no-hitters (6) and still remains in the top-three in each category. She received Regional All-American and All-Conference honors during each of her four years there. The Pride retired her jersey, number 19, in 2009 and then in 2010 she was inducted into Hofstra's Hall of Fame. After her collegiate career, she went on to play professionally in Italy.
Jones graduated Hofstra in 1995 with a degree in marketing and then went on to earn her master's degree in education in 1997. In addition to her duties at Drexel, she is also the head coach of the 18U Mystics Gold travel softball team and runs Jackson's Fastpitch Academy in Sicklerville, N.J.
DiPietro, who has almost four decades of coaching experience, comes to Drexel after spending the last two seasons as the head coach of the Hampton University softball program. In 2015, he took over a Lady Pirates squad that had won a combined 63 games over the prior two seasons. In his first season with the Lady Pirates, DiPietro won 22 games and led Hampton to an 11-6 mark in conference play. Hampton earned the Northern Division's No. 3 seed in the MEAC Tournament and it advanced to the far end of the consolation bracket, falling just one game shy of the championship game.
Before going to Hampton, DiPietro was the head softball coach at Temple for five years and in that span he won 115 games. Temple increased its win total in each of his five seasons (the only program at the school to do so), culminating in a school-record 32 wins in 2013. Under DiPietro's direction, the Owls made three consecutive conference tournament appearances.
Prior to his stint at Temple, DiPietro spent six years as the head coach at La Salle, where he won a combined 77 games – including 22 in 2008. Those 22 wins are the most the Explorers have won in a single season since 1997.
Before his career as a collegiate head coach, DiPietro spent 25 years coaching softball at Camden Catholic High School in New Jersey, with 15 years spent as the program's head coach. He went 274-98 at Camden Catholic, winning three consecutive state titles (1991-93). He was named South Jersey Softball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1991, and was recently inducted into the Camden Catholic Hall of Fame.
DiPietro, who graduated from Gloucester County College and Camden Catholic, has also coached with the Philadelphia Force of the National Pro Fastpitch League, the South Jersey Hurricanes Amateur Softball Association 18-and-under tournament team and the All-Star Trophies ASA Class A tournament team.
