PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team picked up its first conference win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Hofstra at Vidas Field on Friday night. Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll, Vanessa Kara, and Shaelyn McCarty each scored a goal for the Dragons in the winning effort.
The Dragons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as a corner kick for Drexel resulted in Hauch-Fausbøll heading the ball past Hofstra keeper Ashley Wilson for her first goal of the season. Just over ten minutes later, Kara found herself alone down the field and took the ball into the box herself before she sent it into the top left corner of the net for the Dragons' second goal of the night.
Drexel went into halftime leading the Pride, 2-0. Hofstra came out fighting in the second half and saw more opportunity than in the first, but Drexel would extend its advantage in the 68th minute as McCarty put the Dragons ahead, 3-0. McCarty capitalized on a weak touch from a Hofstra defender, broke away down the field and then fired a shot into the top right corner from outside the 18. The Pride would not recover from the deficit, and the Dragons would go on to secure their first victory in CAA action of the season.
The Dragons outshot the Pride on the outing, 18-17. Drexel keeper Christiana Ogunsami picked up her fifth shutout of the season with a six-save performance. Hofstra's Wilson had four saves in the first half before being replaced by Friederike Mehring in goal for the second period. Mehring recorded five saves in her 45 minutes of action.
With the victory, the Dragons improve to 5-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Hofstra moves to 6-3-1 overall, 0-1 CAA.
Next up, the Dragons will host Northeastern for a conference matchup on Sunday at Vidas Field. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
