PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team was defeated by Northeastern in overtime on Sunday afternoon, 1-0. Northeastern's Hannah Rosenblatt scored the sudden victory goal off a penalty kick with 6:17 remaining in the first overtime period to give the Huskies the win.
Northeastern controlled possession for most of the first half, but the Dragons took over with about 20 minutes to play in the first period. Drexel's best chance came in the 40th minute, as a shot from Vanessa Kara curved to find the post. The rebound ricocheted back to Shaelyn McCarty, who made a strong attempt but it hit the crossbar and stayed out of the goal. The Dragons and Huskies would both remain scoreless as the game headed to halftime.
In the second half, Northeastern was on the attack again and in the 63rd minute a dangerous shot from the Huskies' Valentina Soares Gache found the crossbar, as well. Three minutes later, the Dragons had regained possession and forced a corner kick, which Keunna Dill lofted into the box. There it found the foot of a Dragon who had a clear shot at the net, but the ball was ruled out-of-bounds before the shot was taken.
As time wound down in regulation, neither the Dragons or the Huskies were able to find the net. Then just under four minutes into the first overtime period, a handball foul was called against the Dragons in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick being awarded to Northeastern's Rosenblatt. The sophomore gave the Huskies the win in sudden victory as she sent the kick past a diving Christiana Ogunsami.
The Huskies outshot the Dragons, 17-12 on the contest. Drexel keeper Ogunsami totaled a career-high 10 saves on the outing, while Northeastern's Nathalie Nidetch recorded three.
With the loss the Dragons move to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Huskies improve to 6-5-1, 1-1 CAA.
Drexel will hit the road next weekend to visit both James Madison and Towson in CAA action. The Dragons will take on the Dukes on Friday in Harrisonburg, Va. at 7 p.m. before coming back up north to visit Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
