HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Drexel women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over James Madison on Friday evening. Shaelyn McCarty scored what would become the game-winner for the Dragons in the 88th minute.
The first half proved to be evenly matched as the Dragons and Dukes headed to halftime with the game still scoreless. The battle continued through the majority of the second half as well, until Drexel broke the tie with less than 13 minutes to play in regulation. Vanessa Kara played a long ball through the defense which found McCarty, who made good on a one-on-one match up and sent the ball into the net from 12 yards out. The goal marks McCarty's fourth of the season, which is a team-best this season for Drexel.
Despite the loss, the Dukes outshot the Dragons, 15-7. Drexel keeper Christiana Ogunsami notched her sixth shutout of the year with a seven-save performance. James Madison's Hannah McShea recorded three saves on the outing.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 6-5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. James Madison moves to 4-8, 1-2 CAA after the losing effort.
Drexel will return to action on Sunday as it heads back up north to visit Towson. The Dragons and Tigers will square off in a game that is set to begin at 1 p.m.
