Men's Soccer Cedes Lead at Iona, Falling 2-1

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – In line for its first victory of the season, the Drexel men's soccer team instead allowed a pair of second-half goals to host Iona as the Dragons suffered their second defeat of the young campaign, 2-1. Ilai Shvika scored the Dragons' first goal of the year in the first half, but it was not enough as Drexel concluded its season-opening three-game road trip without a victory.
In Tuesday night's loss at La Salle, Drexel was very close to scoring on a number of headers close to the goal. In the 37th minute on Saturday, however, the Dragons connected. Jameson Detweiler threw the ball in and got it all the way into the mixer, where Ilai Shvika rose above the defense and poked it past Iona goalkeeper Kellar Sirstens. That put Drexel on top, a lead the Dragon would take into intermission.
The Dragons held onto that lead for nearly the first half hour of the second half, before Iona evened the score in the 75th minute. Marcos Nunez fed Killian Colombie for Columbie's first of the year. Just eight minutes later, Nunez took care of business on his own, scoring an unassisted goal for his first to put the Gaels ahead for good.
Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach faced a barrage of shots from the Gaels, who put seven shots on goal and saw the senior keeper stop five of them. Drexel and Iona each attempted 12 shots on the afternoon, but the Dragons saw just the one shot go on net.
With three road games under their belts, the Dragons will now return to Vidas Field for the home opener on Tuesday night. That game, against Rhode Island, will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
