FINAL RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's tennis team wrapped up its weekend at the Saint Joseph's Invitational with a pair of victories on Sunday, as Clary Rodriguez Cruz and Salma Ziouti won the Doubles Fight 1 title, while Ziouti earned her first singles crown with a victory in the Singles Flight 2 final.
Rodriguez Cruz and Ziouti had advanced to the championship match of Flight 1 in doubles on Friday, and played Sarah Hall and Amanda Studnicki of Delaware on Sunday to decide the victor. The Drexel duo pulled out to an 8-4 victory, capping an impressive 3-0 weekend for the pair.
Singles play began on Saturday and continued through the day on Sunday. Drexel got a number of favorable results on Day One of singles action, but only Ziouti was able to cap it off with a win on Sunday. After a bye through to the first round of Flight 2, Ziouti took out Danielle Mirabella of Mary Washington, 6-1, 6-2. On Sunday morning, she outlasted Villanova's Alexandra Krogius, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7. The championship also pitted her against a Villanova Wildcat, where she defeated Carina Burdick, 6-2, 6-4.
Ziouti was not the only Dragon to fare well in singles play at the SJU Invitational. Kendra Bunch and Ghita Benhadi each made it to the semifinals of Flight 1 before falling. Ziouti's doubles partner, Rodriguez Cruz, was one match away from making it an all-Dragons final in Flight 2, but she also was knocked out in the semifinals by Burdick. Anisiya Simpson reached the semifinals of Flight 3, while Marta Martinez was a quarterfinalist in Flight 4. Ryshena Providence and Jennifer White each nabbed victories in the consolation brackets of their flights to round out the successful weekend for the Dragons.
Drexel will return to the courts next weekend when the Dragons make their first appearance of the year at the Vidas Courts. The Dragons will host Delaware, Villanova and Temple next Saturday and Sunday at Vidas, with matches beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
