SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Drexel field hockey team's toughest stretch of the season continued Sunday afternoon in a 4-0 loss at No. 7 Syracuse. The Dragons drop to 5-10 (0-2 CAA), while the Orange improve to 11-4 (2-4 ACC).
Syracuse controlled the possession most of the afternoon, took an early lead and never looked back. However, Drexel junior goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist made a career-high 16 saves in the game to keep the Dragons in it.
Syracuse's Lies Lagerweij got the Orange on the board in the 10th minute off a rebound and feed from Emma Tufts. Seven minutes later, Roos Weers blasted home the penalty corner with assists going to Laura Hurff and Claire Webb. Lagerweij again found herself making a play on the offensive end, driving baseline and pulling Gilchrist out of goal to find Caroline Cady in front for the score in the 31st minute for a 3-0 Syracuse lead in halftime. In the second half, Lagerweij had her second assist of the afternoon, this time finding Webb for the Orange's final goal in the 63rd minute. Syracuse went on to hold on for the 4-0 victory.
Syracuse outshot Drexel, 22-1, including 20-1 in shots on goal. Syracuse has nine penalty corners to Drexel's zero.
The Dragons return to Buckley Field next weekend for matchups against Towson on Friday night and William & Mary on Sunday afternoon.
