Field Hockey Defends Buckley Field Friday in Win Over Towson, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA -- The Drexel field hockey team earned its first conference win of the season Friday night at Buckley Field over the Towson Tigers, 3-1. The Dragons improve to 6-10 (1-2 CAA) on the year, while the Tigers fall to 1-14 (0-4 CAA).
The Dragons shot 10 times in the first half but could not put one past Towson goalkeeper Emilee Woodall. However, in the second half, the Dragons found their way on the offensive end and broke through three times before the Tigers could find an answer.
Just over six minutes into the second half, Katie Pappas connected with Megan Wiest on a cross from right to left, and Wiest hammered it home for her fourth goal of the season. About 12 minutes later, the Dragons again found themselves on the attack. Tess Bernheimer put a shot on Woodall, which the Towson keeper stopped, but the ball rebounded right back to the sophomore forward, who found the back of the cage for the fifth time this year. Drexel's run continued less than five minutes later as Rebecca Weinstock crossed a ball from right to left and found Tess Horan on the far post, and Horan scooped a ball to the top left corner for her fifth of the season to give the Dragons' a 3-0 lead. Towson was able to stop the bleeding 116 seconds later when Beira Ho took a ball inside the seven-yard mark and found Paige Zaleppa on the left post. Zaleppa knocked it past Drexel goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist for the Tigers' first and only score on the night.
The Dragons outshot the Tigers 21-5 on the night, including 10-2 in shots on goal. Woodall made seven stops for Towson, while Gilchrist made one for Drexel. Drexel had eight penalty corner chances to Towson's five.
Drexel returns to action Sunday at noon against No. 18 William & Mary at Buckley Field. The game will be Alumni and Family Day for the Dragons, with an alumni reception immediately following the game at Wissahickon Brewing Company.
