PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team closed out its final weekend home stand of the season at Buckley Field on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to No. 18 William & Mary. The Dragons head into the final weekend of the regular season with a 6-11 (1-3 CAA) mark, while the Tribe improve to 12-5 (4-1 CAA).
Drexel played the Tribe tough from the start, but William & Mary's firepower proved to be too much in the end. From the opening whistle, the Dragons withstood three Tribe penalty corner opportunities in the opening 15 minutes. After a William & Mary shot and an Erin Gilchrist save, the Dragons broke the other way with Chandler McFeeley on a breakaway with only Tribe keeper Morgan Connor between herself and the cage. Connor, however, played it perfectly, coming out to challenge and meeting McFeeley just inside the circle to stop the scoring opportunity. At 22:25, Tess Bernheimer was called for a yellow card, and the Tribe found their opening with the advantage when just 73 seconds into the card, Emma MacLeod passed from the center to the left post and found Cammie Lloyd for the score. The Dragons would have a couple more penalty corner chances, but the Tribe's defense was up to the task, and Lloyd's 10th goal of the season remained the difference at the half.
In the second half, the Tribe cleaned up some of its first-half mistakes and comfortably controlled the possession throughout the final 35 minutes. Just over six minutes into the second half the Tribe found itself with a penalty corner chance. After entering the ball, MacLeod slipped back into the play and planted herself at the left post, where Christie van de Kamp found her for the score. MacLeod's 10th of the season gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead and some breathing room. The Dragons would have a fantastic scoring chance in the 58th minute, when McFeeley found herself on a run into the circle on the right side. She crossed a ball towards the far post, but a diving Megan Wiest could not get a stick on the pass. The Tribe would control the rest of the way and leave Buckley Field with a 2-0 win.
William & Mary outshot the Dragons 22-6 on the afternoon, including 15-2 in shots on goal. Gilchrist kept the Dragons alive with 13 saves, while Connor needed two stops to preserve the shutout. The Tribe had seven penalty corner chances to the Dragons' three.
Drexel will close the regular season with conference matchups at Northeastern on Friday and at Hofstra on Sunday. The Dragons will need to win both to earn the four-seed and play in the CAA Championships the following weekend.
