BOSTON, Mass. - The Drexel field hockey team dropped a key Colonial Athletic Association matchup Friday evening at Northeastern's Dedham Field, 3-0. The loss knocks the Dragons out of contention for the fourth seed in next weekend's CAA Championships. Drexel falls to 6-12 (1-4 CAA), while Northeastern improves to 8-10 (3-2 CAA). With the win, Northeastern is headed to the CAA Championships.
Drexel held Northeastern in check throughout the first half while trying to create offensive chances for itself. The Huskies' first goal came on a penalty stroke, and would be the only score of the opening half. After the break, however, Northeastern caged a quick goal to give itself some breathing room before tacking on one more before the night was over.
The Dragons weathered a couple of early Northeastern penalty corner opportunities. On Huskies' third chance of the game, which came in the 20th minute, Erin Gilchrist came up with the initial stop, but the Dragons were whistled for a foul that awarded Northeastern a penalty stroke. Ffian Thompson knocked home the chance to give the Huskies an early lead. Northeastern was able to limit the Dragons scoring opportunities in the first half and went into halftime unscathed, holding to a 1-0 advantage.
After the half, Northeastern was able to extend its lead just 114 seconds into play. Jamie Bartucca, the Huskies' leading scorer this season, crossed a ball into Kristin Abreu, who secured the pass and fired a shot past Gilchrist. Drexel would find itself with a penalty corner less than five minutes later, but Amy Ferguson's blast was blocked. In the 51st minute, Northeastern was able to capitalize on a penalty corner chance of its own. Aniek van de Graaf's shot found the stick of teammate Camille O'Conor, who redirected the ball into the back of the cage for her seventh goal of the year. The goal gave Northeastern a commanding 3-0 lead with less than 20 minutes to play. Playing with a sense of urgency, the Dragons found themselves with perhaps their best scoring chances of the game with less than 10 minutes remaining. Following a Bartucca shot that sailed wide, the Dragons flipped the field and Tess Bernheimer fired a shot on goal, but Sam Bodo was there for the Huskies for the defensive save. The Dragons kept pushing, but a Tess Horan shot got blocked, a Chandler McFeeley shot was stopped by Northeastern keeper Julia Gluyas and a Bernheimer shot went wide. Northeastern would then regain control of the ball and finish off the 3-0 victory.
Northeastern outshot Drexel 15-7 overall and 9-3 in shots on goal. Gilchrist made six stops, while Gluyas made two in the shutout. The Huskies has 10 penalty corners to Drexel's one.
The Dragons will close out their season on Sunday in Hempstead, N.Y. against Hofstra at noon.
