Swimming and Diving Opens 2017-18 Season Against La Salle and Villanova this Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's and women's swimming and diving teams open fall competition this Friday night with action continuing through Saturday. On Friday, Drexel diving hosts La Salle and Villanova in the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Friday night, while swimming competes in the Philly Relays at La Salle against the Explorers along with Villanova and Penn. On Saturday, swimming will host La Salle and Villanova again, this time in their home pool.
Action on Friday both at the Philly Relays and for diving at Drexel Pool begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday, swimming will begin at noon at the DAC.
2016-17 RECAP
Last season, the Drexel men finished second at the CAA Championships while the women posted its best conference championship finish at CAAs, placing fourth. The Dragons accumulated numerous conference awards including the second consecutive CAA Women's Swimmer of the Year and CAA Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet nods for Rachel Bernhardt and CAA Women's Rookie Swimmer of the Year honors for Alexa Kutch. Coach Adam Braun was recognized as the CAA Women's Co-Coach of the Year, the first CAA coaching award for Drexel swimming. Anthony Musciano swept men's diving honors from the conference, taking home CAA Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet, CAA Diver of the Year and CAA Rookie Diver of the Year. Diving coach Emily Howard became the fourth from Drexel to be named the CAA Men's Diving Coach of the Year, becoming just the third female honoree to win the award throughout the conference since 2004. During the 2017 CAA Championships, Drexel broke 22 team records, eight freshman records and had 49 all-time top 5 performances. Between the men and women, the program won 12 gold medals, nine silver and seven bronze. Bernhardt led the way as seven-time All-CAA for top-three finishes on the women's side while freshman Jason Arthur was six-time All-CAA for the men.
REMATCH WITH THE EXPLORERS AND WILDCATS
This weekend's meet marks a rematch of the three squads that met in Villanova to begin competition last season. The men's squad swept the Explorers and Wildcats, defeating La Salle by a 154.5-145.5 margin and picking up a 200.5-99.5 win over Villanova. The women also defeated the Explorers, 226-74 but fell to the Wildcats, 177.5-122.5.
LOOKING FORWARD
Following this weekend's meets, the Dragons will head to Baltimore, Md. on Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4 to face Loyola, Johns Hopkins, and West Chester.
ON THE HORIZON
There are two other meets in the first half of the squad's 2017-18 schedule for Drexel. The Dragons will compete at the Patriot Invitational at George Mason from November 16-18 before the AT&T Winter National Championships at Ohio State from Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
