PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's swimming team split competition on Saturday against La Salle and Villanova as it opened its home competition at Drexel Pool for the 2017-18 season. The Dragons fell to Villanova, 196.00-87.00, but then went on to defeat La Salle, 212.00-76.00.
The women's squad tallied two first-place finishes, six second-place finishes, and eight third-place finishes on the outing. Sophomore Alexa Kutch took second in three races, including in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke and as a part of the 200-meter medley relay. New Dragons Gabrielle Rudy and Tanja Kirmse also fared well on the day. Rudy took first in the 200-meter IM, second in the 200-meter breaststroke, and third in the 100-meter breaststroke. Kirmse earned a first-place finish as a part of the 400-meter freestyle relay and then went on to take third place in both the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter butterfly.
"Our entire coaching staff is super proud of how both teams performed today in the water and on the pool deck supporting each other," said Drexel Head Coach Adam Braun. "They have put in a ton of hard work over the last six weeks and it showed in our results today."
The Dragons will return to action next weekend as they head to Baltimore to take on Loyola (Md.), Johns Hopkins, and West Chester in the Loyola Invitational. Competition will begin on Friday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. and then continue with sessions on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
