ELON, N.C - The Drexel women's soccer team finished out the 2017-18 regular season with a 4-0 victory over Elon on Sunday. The win secured a second-place finish in the conference for the Dragons for the second-straight year and gives the squad first-round bye in the CAA playoffs. The Dragons will now take on the winner of the third and sixth seed game on Friday, Nov. 3 in Hempstead, N.Y.
The Dragons were quick to get on the board in what turned out to be a must-win game to hold off Northeastern from overtaking the second-place spot. Senior Imani Walker found the rebound off a shot from Madison Dunn and headed it back into the net to give Drexel a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute. 16 minutes later, the Dragons extended their lead as Rachel Sharkey found Shaelyn McCarty deep in the box who fired a quick shot into the back of the goal to put Drexel up by two goals with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half.
Drexel took its 2-0 lead into halftime but they weren't finished yet. Just under four minutes into the second period, Walker fed the ball to rookie Raenah Campbell, who put the ball between the Elon keeper's legs for her second goal of the season and Drexel's third of the game. The Dragons' final goal came with under nine minutes to play as freshman Melissa Lyon found a ball from McCarty and put it away to solidify a Drexel victory.
The Drexel defense finishes the regular season with nine shutouts on the year. Senior keeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded five saves on the outing and sophomore Libby Baeza came in to secure one of her own with five-plus minutes of action to end the game. Elon's Hanna Macaulay tallied two saves on the day.
The Phoenix outshot the Dragons, 14-11 on the day in its losing effort. The Dragons close out the regular season with a 11-6-1 overall record and a 6-2-1 mark against conference opponents. Elon finishes its year at 9-6-4, 2-4-3 CAA.
The Dragons will await the outcome of the CAA quarterfinal games on Sunday, Oct. 29 which will determine whether they will face No. 3 Northeastern or No. 6 College of Charleston in their semifinal matchup on Friday, Nov. 3 which will be hosted by No. 1 Hofstra.
