HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Drexel field hockey team fell to the No. 16 James Madison Dukes on Friday evening in Harrisonburg, Va., 7-1. The Dragons drop to 5-8 (0-2 CAA) on the year, while the Dukes improve to 8-3 (1-0 CAA).
James Madison opened the game with five straight goals in the first 29 minutes to take control. A minute before the half, Tess Bernheimer notched her fourth goal of the season to get the Dragons on the board. James Madison then scored two more times in the second half to close out a 7-1 win. The Dukes' Lisa Lejeune had a hat trick in the game. Erin Gilchrist made 13 saves, one shy of her season and career high.
The Dukes controlled the pace for much of the evening, holding possession of the ball and limiting Drexel's chances. Corey Mayer opened the scoring for the Dukes at the 3:19 mark before Lejeune notched her first of the night just 28 seconds later. Less than four minutes later, Mayer again found the back of the cage, her fourth of the season, to stretch the lead to three. Then in the 20th minute, Mattea Harris entered the ball on the penalty corner then slipped into the play to deflect Hannah Hall's shot from the point past Gilchrist for the score. Less than nine minutes later, Hall again dished out an assist as this time it was Melanie Kusakavitch on the deflection on the corner to make it a five-goal game. Right before the half, less than thirty seconds after entering the contest, Reilly Finegan found Bernheimer in the scrum in front for a low shot and a goal to answer to make it 5-1.
The Dragons settled in a bit after the half, but the Dukes kept pushing. Ten minutes after the half, Lejeune found herself in position to take possession of Mayer's shot that had rebounded off Gilchrist's pads on the corner and knocked home the rebound. Drexel did have a strong scoring chance in the 56th minute when Isis Cornelissen entered the ball on the corner and the shot was set up for Bernheimer, but Florian Sondern found herself behind keeper Caitlin Nelson and was there to make the defensive save. Lejeune was not done yet, though, as she scored her third of the game and sixth of the season in the final minute of play off the feed from McKenzie Ridgely to make it a 7-1 final.
James Madison outshot the Dragons 29-6 overall and 21-3 in shots on goal. Drexel made 14 saves, 13 from Gilchrist and a defensive save from Katie Bagdon. Nelson made one save in goal for James Madison. The Dukes had 11 penalty corners to the Dragons' six.
The Dragons continue their road trip in Virginia on Sunday afternoon when they head to Charlottesville to take on No. 3 Virginia (10-2, 3-1 ACC).
