CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 6 Drexel men's squash team (13-5) dropped its quarterfinals matchup with the No. 3 Columbia Lions (12-2) in the first round of the Potter Cup on Friday afternoon by a final of 9-0 from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. The Dragons now move to the consolation portion of the bracket for Saturday and Sunday.
Drexel's Michael Thompson, Atticus Kelly and Joshua Hughes were the first to play for the Dragons on Friday from the No. 3, 6, and 9 positions, respectively. Though each fell in their first game, Thompson came back to win the second and third while Kelly won the second. In the end, the trio would go on to drop each match: Hughes in three, Kelly in four and Thompson in five as the Lions took control of the match early on with a commanding 3-0 lead.
After a loss by Mostafa Aboul Makarim in the No. 8 spot, 11-6, 11-8, 17-15, Columbia captured a fourth win.
The Lion victory was sealed after Drexel's Luke Willemse suffered his first three-game loss of the year by a final of 11-3, 11-5, 11-1 to Columbia's Carter Robitaille.
It also comes as the second loss to Columbia on the year after the Dragons were swept back in November in New York.
Drexel will now play No. 7 Yale on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. on courts 4, 5 and 6 in the consolation semifinals.
